Insects in early winter

Life on snow.
Now that the weekend is going to be even warmer it will definitely be worthwhile to look for insects too on a forest walk – after Urmas Tartes’s prize-winning photo of the springtail we all know how many insects actually are on the move in the cold season, so it is worth having a look. Especially if the thermometer shows some degrees above zero. Just now you can find flies and mosquitoes as well as spiders and harvestmen (Opiliones) flying or moving around outdoors. The caddisfly (order Trichoptera) in the photo proves it – it was sitting on a ball of snow with others of its kind. Every now and then it took a stately walk along the thorn. Chilly weather doesn’t exactly make insects move quickly, and it doesn’t need food. But why it was there on the snowball – we don’t know.
