The autumn-like weather after Kadripäev (St Catherine’s Day, November 25), with temperature up to 8 degrees warmer than the ordinary average, and forests filled with water from one end to another, keeps brown bears on the move. In a dense forest in Raplamaa a big male - paw width 23 centimetres - has shovelled up three quite high dens for sleeping as his habit is. Such preparations mark that activity lessens, and feeding ends; the gathering of winter fat should already be done with, and the time to go to sleep isn’t far away.
Roughly half of the food for fattening up in autumn was grain - oats or wheat -, then some rape, herbs and apples and berries; the cowberry crop was fine this year. Proteins came from insects and animal matter.
The female bear winters with her cubs from this year nearby; the cubs make their own dens imitating their mother.
