Lime fruits exposed

Lime or linden.

Looking upwards in the city you will see leaves on the oaks and "tufts” on ashes, but the big linden or lime trees too still carry lots of fruits that have gone yellow in the cold. The nutlets of the lime ripened only a month ago, and we will se them dropping to the ground during the whole winter.
We have three kinds of lime growing in Estonia: the native small-leaved lime (Tilia cordata), the imported large-leaved lime (Tilia platyphyllos) and their hybrid, the common lime. Two of them, the small-leaved lime and the large-leaved lime, can be rather easily distinguished from each other: the former has almost smooth fruits, while the fruits of the latter have raised "ribs”
.
