Blackbirds still around

Blackbird.

We can see that winter hasn’t seriously shown its face yet here in Estonia from the small groups of blackbirds (Turdus merula) still looking for food here and there in built-up areas (and cities too). Blackbirds are known to leave late – in November, and some in December. But those Christmas month “departees” should be the last. Blackbirds are generally sedentary in the southern parts of their range; from us they still must be absent for a few months because of frosty weather. Only a very few mad winterers don’t leave, the “extreme weather athletes” among birds.

But winter has only started
