We can see that winter hasn’t seriously shown its face yet here in Estonia from the small groups of blackbirds (Turdus merula) still looking for food here and there in built-up areas (and cities too). Blackbirds are known to leave late – in November, and some in December. But those Christmas month “departees” should be the last. Blackbirds are generally sedentary in the southern parts of their range; from us they still must be absent for a few months because of frosty weather. Only a very few mad winterers don’t leave, the “extreme weather athletes” among birds.
