Summary of the bird observation days, Birdwatch 2009
In Estonia the international bird watching event was co-ordinated by BirdLife International`s partner here, the Estonian Ornithological Society. A total of 74 observation forms have been sent in, and at least 168 people took part in compiling them. The watchers in Estonia noted more than 180 000 individuals from 169 species. The zeal of the bird enthusiasts was very likely dampened by the bad weather, which on the second day actually was so bad that several scheduled bird-watching trips were cancelled. According to the observers the weather influenced birdlife too; the migration activity usually seen at this time was very low.
The longest lists of species arrived from Saaremaa as expected, from Sõrve bird station (99 species), and western Estonia, Põõsaspea (94 species). But seeing to the number of noted individuals Põõsaspea topped Sõrve, noting 32704 and 24729 individuals respectively. Among amateur observers the best ones collected more than 80 species and 10 000 noted individuals.
The most numerous species were barnacle geese, chaffinch and widgeon.
The most frequently noted species in the lists were however great tit, hooded crow, Eurasian jay and raven. The most interesting species noted during the observation days were little grebe, peregrine falcon, guillemot, rock pipit and serin.
The Estonian Ornithological Society would like to thank all who took part in the observations, arranged events and helped to compile the results. Detailed results are shown on the EOÜ website www.eoy.ee
