Our largest woodpecker – the black woodpecker. A bird with a red crown is either a male bird or a juvenile. The female birds have only a red patch at the back of the neck (hindcrown). A strong beak, horn-coloured and with a dark tip. It is a bird of large forest areas, and in winter there can be up to 15 000 individuals in Estonia.
