House sparrows are our typical urban sparrows, just as tree sparrows are our established country sparrows. In winter the two sparrow species quite often move around together in joint flocks and then we notice birds of three different plumages in these companies; the female and the male of the tree sparrow look alike.
Tree sparrows have a red-brown crown, and whitish cheeks with a black patch on them. They are smaller than their relatives, and with brighter coloured plumage. An observant watcher won’t confuse the two, although their behaviour and the chirping calls are similar
.
