The nice thing with lime trees now is that a part of the trees are noticeable from far away – the seeds with small wings are still hanging on to the branches, of a bleached brown-reddish colour. Maples also display some stalks of the seed “noses”, but the lime or linden can be quite thickly hung with seeds. In Arne’s photo it is true that only one winged fruit shows in the left-hand top corner but this photo was made in early spring.
We will not talk about the bark of the lime now, because in winter only the sharpest forest sages can determine a tree species from its bark, but nature man Mats Kangur recommends that when in doubt, then taste the buds: those of the lime have a pleasant soft nutty taste. Other trees have bitter or tasteless buds.
