Moss in a snowy forest

  Squirrel-tail moss
Harilik hiissammal
 Leucodon sciuroides

In this wealth of snow there aren’t many mosses to see, but the squirrel-tail moss only needs to be noticed even now. It is quite common and grows like the “wavy” mat in the photo above on old deciduous trees, from the middle of the trunk up to the crown. We can come across the squirrel-tail moss on trees in avenues, parks and cemeteries because it can tolerate some air pollution. And of course in natural broadleaf and mixed forests.
