There is ever more ice in the rapids in upper runs of spring-fed rivers. Our winter number of kingfishers has never been above a hundred individuals. And there is no other creature as colourful as this in our nature – royal blue, white, warm red. A disproportionately large head for a small, sparrow-sized bird and a long beak, a nearly non-existent tail and tiny red feet. The beak of the male is black, the base of the female bird’s beak red. We can only wish you fortunate  encounters.

They feed on small fish and invertebrates living in the rapids.
