The two shrikes – the red-backed shrike and the great grey shrike - are, as we all know, the 16th Birds of the Year of the Estonian Ornithological Society. The red-backed shrikes are on winter holidays in Africa now, but this is just the time to look for the great grey shrikes. A home page www.eoy.ee/ogijad has been opened too within the Bird of the year project: all observations of grey shrikes in January-February can be reported there.
But with little experience of them – where to go looking for a grey shrike (or great grey fiscal)? The grey shrike can be seen in all kinds of open and half-open landscapes, where it can find a perching place with a good view. It waits patiently in the top of a bush or on a power line, until a smaller bird or a mouse loses its wariness. There is more to read about the grey shrike and its habits on the home page of the Bird of the year. There are also many fine photos, and for amusement, Chintis Lundgren’s animated film “The great grey shrike”
Enjoyable shrike meetings, all Looduskalender friends!
