Our winter companions - jackdaws

The winter population is estimated to be more than a hundred thousand birds, including the winter immigrants, and this is more than we have nesting here in the summer. The number has increased clearly during the last ten years.

A little smaller than crows, and very clever birds. The jackdaws look as if they have a silver-grey scarf on the head, the back is black with a metallic sheen and the breast is dark grey. Because the forehead is black, the iris of the eye seems white, but it is really steely grey. Jackdaws move in pairs or small groups, mostly in urban landscapes. Looking for them in forests is not worthwhile
