In the outskirts of a forest the longtailed tit is easy to recognize at once: it has a very, very long tail, and a round little head and body. It can’t be confused with any other of our birds: its tail is at least as long as the whole body and head – including the tiny beak – of the little bird. It looks very adoreable. The head, throat and breast are brightly white. On the underparts and sides there are pink tones. The back and tail are black, the flight feathers of the wings are edged in white.
Male and female of adult birds look similar, young birds are recognisable from their dark brown cheeks, nape and back.
In winter long-tailed tits roam around in copses and sparsely wooded forests, sometimes they also appear in parks. The winter number may be up to a hundred thousand birds in good years.
The long-tailed tit belongs to the long-tailed tit or bushtit family (Aegithalidae), our other tits are in the Paridae family.
