Coal tit.
Coal tit | Musttihane | Parus ater |
In winter they move in mixed flocks with for instance crested tits and willow tits, in conifer as well as in mixed forests; otherwise they lead very discreet lives. They are companionable birds who don’t much like to be on their own, and when they have become separated from the flock they quickly search for and join their comrades again. They are only very seldom seen at bird feeders.
The coal tits have one characteristic mark – a white patch at the back of the neck. Unfortunately it doesn’t show in Arne’s photo. Black crown and chin patch, a grey back; adult birds of both sexes look similar. The breast and belly of adult birds are in pastel colours, those of young birds grey-yellow. It is one of our smallest tits, reminding of a small great tit.
