In the cold weather a jay visited the bird feeder for the first time. The bird, somewhat smaller than a crow, has the Estonian national colours – blue, black, white - on its folded wings, a grey-pink body, inner part of tail white, the tail itself long and black but not as long as that of the magpie. When the jay is agitated, the feathers on the top of its head bristle. Jays are cautious but not shy of people, and prefer to keep to the outskirts of forests with plenty of undergrowth. In the autumn they collect and store food for the winter.
Their winter number in Estonia varies between a hundred thousand and a quarter of a million birds.
