Parus cristatus |
Adult crested tits can be recognized from their black and white patterned head crest: no other tits have such warlike ornaments. Outside forests crested tits are seldom seen, and they are only occasional surprise visitors at bird feeders. You can look for them in pine forests. If you hear a fine, thin zee-zeeing sound in the forest, it may be from crested tits. In summer and autumn spiders and other titbits were cached in cracks in tree branches, and now they are rediscovered there.
The crested tit is a numerous nesting and wintering bird on the Estonian mainland, but very rare on the islands. In winter they mostly live in groups. And in a few weeks, when the sun has risen higher, they will start forming pairs.
