The first couple has been seen now. Males and females share winter sleep quarters, probably a corner of a nearby „beaver castle”. February is almost half gone and their mating period should start soon – this is why they are moving around. Raccoon dogs look incongrously round in winter from their layers of stored winter fat and the long-haired fur. As we have seen, several raccoon dogs can share a quite small area peaceably when there is food on the feeding ground. And by the way, nearly half the food of raccoon dogs is vegetarian.

The rather gruesome growling and whining of these nocturnal creatures will soon be heard as the groups of animals newly awake from the winter sleep increase around the feeding grounds.
