If the elks (moose) wade in snow up to their “waists” then how do smaller creatures manage?
Whenever possible, all use roads and other areas that have been cleared of snow. Deer get on in the snow only by jumps. There are no foxes to be seen in the fields, catching mice as usual, the snow doesn’t bear their weight. Wolves have their heat period and the trails of their activities show on the roads. Lynxes move after the deer flocks, where there are such. The wild boar sows mostly keep apart from the flock, and the larger and stronger keep the used paths open, going first. Pine martens were described in an article some days ago. There are also plenty of hare tracks at roadsides.
After the snowfalls and blowing snow a wholly fresh new book of tracks opens, quite fascinating.
