Preserving native breeds and varieties

On Saturday, February 27, starting at 11 am, the preservation of native animal breeds and plant varieties will be discussed in Tartu Environmental Education Centre, at Kompanii 10. Setting up an association for this is also on the agenda.

In Estonia, as elsewhere in the world, old native plant varieties and animal breeds that have proved their usefulness locally are disappearing. The breeds and varieties that have adapted to our environment during generations are losing ground to modern breeds and varieties. By this our richness of biological life, cultural heritage and power to manage independently on our own is impoverished in the long run .

Getting together people who care for the traditional varieties and breeds into an association is a vital condition for preventing the loss of Estonian seeds and animals. The organisers invite all who have the keeping of an old-time animal breed or a plant variety at heart, or who simply care for preserving our own vegetables, to meet and set up an association or society.
