Migrant birds begin to arrive by and by

Greenfinches and great tit.

This winter will be with us for a long time yet. All who feed  winter birds will surely keep their bird feeders supplied with food for their darlings. Until the snow melts at least partly there is nothing at all to get from nature, and birds don’t store food in winter.

Soon the migratory birds will start to arrive, and so we encounter another problem. The arriving birds cannot use the bird feeders, they have simply never done so. But the arriving passerines may be curious about what keeps the winter birds in the places where they flock together. And  the arrivals may get some help if we spread a little of the food on the ground under the feeder – some travellers at least may chance to find food there.

It won’t attract rodents as it would in autumn, and the number of cats roaming around has decreased markedly. The explorations of our indoors pussy-purrs we can keep in check ourselves.
