Dear bird friends!

On Sunday, March 28, the spring bird observation contest between cities takes place. It is arranged by the Estonian Ornithological Society (EOÜ) in co-operation with the Läänemaa Bird Club. The history of the event goes back to 2002, when observations of birds in an urban environment started in Haapsalu.
Interest in the event has grown by each year, and last year twelve Estonian cities took part.
All with an interest in birds are welcome to take part in the inter-city contest. For this you only need to set up a team of 2-5 members and go on a birdwatching tour in a city on March 28. As the contest title says, only the birds that are seen without passing outside the city borders are counted. The aim is to make people aware of the wealth of birds in a city environment, and of the arrival of migrant birds.
Last year 94 species were noted in the contest, and the year before an impressive count of 104 bird species was registered. Such species as white-backed woodpecker, grey-headed woodpecker, pygmy owl, hazel grouse and black grouse, otherwise closely tied to natural landscapes, were noted in the cities among the other birds.
Detailed rules for the contest and results from previous years can be read on EOÜ’s home page www.eoy.ee
We ask all who participate to please forward their results already on the day of the contest to the coordinator of the contest:
