Greylag geese.
Greylag goose, grey goose | Hallhani | Anser anser |
In years with little snow greylag geese have arrived to our meadows on the coast as early as in the beginning of February. This year they are one month later but now the first are here.
An adult bird can weigh up to three-four kilos, making it the largest of our anserines. These cautious birds must really be seen, but here are some characteristic traits for identification:
A sure sign are the light edges of the wings; easily noticeable in flight. The head, neck and back are greyish brown, the underparts paler. Adults have pink-orange beaks and feet; a greyish tinge makes the feet of the juveniles less colurful.
