First nature feature Loomus (Nature)

Text: Remek Meel

Media features reflecting nature have gradually become briefer and more cursory since there is usually little time to spare for these things, and the aim is to forward summarised information as briefly as possible. The price is, regrettably, a somewhat distorted view of life in nature. Today’s nature features in media leave you with the impression of some constantly killing and eating others and of an ever present rush back and forth. It may then come as a great surprise that some predators sleep the greater part of the day and that most animals will not use up energy aimlessly. Nature has its own rhythm, there are urgent periods as well as periods when life goes on at a more peaceful pace.
Our aim is to show conditions in nature in their genuine state and to talk about things without embellishments, simply as they are. We have allowed ourselves to show nature, and one of its parts – man – at a somewhat slower pace, and offer all who are interested a chance to watch our nature features just when they have the opportunity and wish. Our target group is people who find it difficult to settle down in front of the TV at a given time. This means first of all people who are actively engaged in nature, and with being in nature.

The features are in three parts. The first part is about the animal kingdom, presenting interesting traits in the life of different species and the various situations that occur in their activities. In Estonia there are many  species of animals, and many facets of their activities that are highly fascinating and well worth more insight than only a bare statement of facts.
In order to know nature  such aspects of the activities of the various animals are vitally important.

The second part presents persons who are closely tied to nature. They may be well known nature personalities, but can also be quite unknown to the public. One thing however is certain: they are all special in some way.

The third part – the backstage part – tells about different utilities and equipment that we need to carry out a particular task in nature and that help us to stay alive in nature. In this part we introduce these things, from socks, boots, cameras to vehicles.

Our first feature was produced during the last two months of winter when there was proper winter weather, and extreme conditions that are also reflected in the life of the animals in the forest. We strive to find and record the ultimate essentials, not visible or tangible but felt by instinct. We will of course also show aspects of the life of the animals that reflect the seasons.

A particular trait is that 99% of the stored  material is recorded with a reflex camera. The main camera is a Canon EOS 7D; and film sequences were made with Canon EOS 5D.
The features are planned to appear every one or two months depending on the season and the current topics.

Remek Meel:
I have been working with nature for the greater part of my life. The last 12 years with recording nature in still photos as well as moving media.
Activities in films have been production of educational films in nature and production of video materials and author stories from nature for the Estonian Broadcasting, ERR, Osoon programmes.

Jan Siimson   http://www.okaskera.ee/
Engaged in nature from early childhood. The interest grew deeper on fishing and hunting tours with my father. There have been years when nearly all free time went to bird observations, with the addition of recording it, starting with photos and now more and more by video.

The nature feature Loomus (Nature) is an audiovisual production, at the Internet address www.loodusvideo.ee.

All material in the features and on the home page, including nature sounds, is filmed or otherwise recorded by us.

Guest in the first feature is Sven Začek..   http://www.zacekfoto.ee/
