Banding day

Translated by Scott Diel

A minute before banding

At night 16th of June it was nine degrees in the forest and rained a tiny bit in the morning. The second half of the day was partly sunny and twenty degrees—everything dried quickly. Since they're promising rain for Tuesday, we decided to go ahead band the chicks on Monday. We made it just in time, because a thunderstorm hit just as we finished banding. The chicks happily ate the food we brought for them—a full stomach helps them quickly forget the annoyances of banding! We'll report the information we gathered shortly.
We thank those who have sent the reminders, if two chicks did not get checked for the stork parasite. We forgot to take a DNA sample from all of the chicks, which would have required one feather from each.  Under the pressure of a nearing thunderstorm and under the watchful eyes of thousand of viewers, it's not so easy to do your work as usual! At the nest were Kristo and Urmas.
So that we wouldn't destroy the nesting tree by repeatedly climbing it, we used a collapsible ladder. That was the source of all the clanging racket. Watch the video.
