There are not all that many black grouse (Tetrao tetrix) mating dance display sites that we can reach with a web camera. This time ELISA helps out with the transmission. The site in camera view is an old hayfield, now harrowed. Despite this the grouse come here, although it is a different matter whether they also come into reach of our camera. Before sunrise at least the sounds accompanying the mating dance display, or lek, should be there to hear. The display starts in early morning before sunrise, so it is most convenient for our American viewers. For us it is a part of a long-term commitment: this year we try to find out how and with which technology it should be undertaken.
At other times there is the trilling of larks and the voices of other spring-time birds of open landscapes. Our apologies if there might be little to watch but without reconnaissance, battle shouldn’t be undertaken, and without observant watchers the results would be poor.

Elisa arranges the transmission of the image to the EENet server, where coding and splitting of the stream to viewers takes place. The power supply system is fed from a solar panel.
NB! Double click on the Media Player video window to see the video in full screen mode. If direct stream viewing doesn’t succeed, the web player below can be tried. With it, the image from the camera can watched directly in the web browser.

The project is supported by
  • Camera - Mobotix (Estonian representative - Beta Grupp OÜ)
  • Transmission of signal to EENet server - ELISA
  • Splitting of stream, and server space - EENet
  • Consultations and choice of site – RMK (Estonian State Forest Management Centre) hunting specialists and Linnuse Hunting Association
