Nesting begins for mew gulls

Who will be left out? Three mew gulls at the nest.

This spring nesting actually comes quite early for mew, or common, gulls. The mew gulls laid their first eggs at Kakrarahu on April 23. This is two days earlier than last year and also two days earlier than the long-term average date for the first egg (April 25).

Mallards, grey geese, ringed plovers and oystercatchers have also started the egg-laying.

At the same time the mute swans don’t seem to have any thoughts at all of nesting. There is as yet not a single proper nest heap, and the swans themselves are few around the isle. Last year at this time there were already eight nests.

With greetings from Puise,

Kalev Ratiste
