Male hawfinch.
On April 23, when it snowed in south Estonia, hawfinches came to pick seeds at the birdfeeder that is familiar to all Looduskalender's viewers. They had not showed up during the winter web camera transmissions.
The hawfinches have an Estonian name – suurnokk: big beak, gross beak - that at once says the most important thing about their exterior. Several of their relatives actually have English names with grosbeak in it. The females are somewhat paler coloured than the males.
