Still time for hepaticas

  Hepatica, liverleaf Sinilill  Hepatica

The time of hepaticas has lasted some weeks already, and thanks to the cool weather it isn’t at an end yet. And this simple little flower still manages to astonish. Firstly on Saaremaa, around Karujärve, with its enormous pink-coloured stands, and secondly in Mahtra bog.
Last year I discovered a wonderful specimen just at the edge of the bog, on a birch root, and luckily it had survived the winter. But the plant certainly knows its beauty and that makes it a little capricious. It decided namely to open its petals only when all other relatives in the neighbourhood had long since arrived at the flowering feast. Or maybe it was difficult to open these tens and tens of petals – they are so many, and each one must be unfurled!

Interesting – how does a bumblebee get to its stamens?
