Our most beautiful orchid starts flowering now, in wooded meadows and in alvar forests and broadleaf forests.
This orchid, with the largest flowers of all European orchid species, is placed under protection by law everywhere.
All nature friends recognise the flower of the lady’s slipper; the leaves remind of those of the lily of the valley, but they are somewhat sturdier. There are one or two, seldom three flowers on the short-haired stalk. The plant comes into flowering age only after 10-15 years. Just a few bee species can pollinate the flowers, and only one fourth of the flowers set seed.
The weekend is approaching; some of us will surely get the chance to admire the first flowers of the lady’s slipper in nature.
