The deer bucks marked their territories in May – they drew furrows in the bark of trees with their antlers and they spiced the message to their comrades about who owns the territory with the scent glands on the forehead and neck.

The females, does, have young now, around one week old for the first ones to give birth. About three-quarters of the does have twins. The fur coat of the small ones is brownish-black, with white dots in lengthwise bands. Week-old kids manage to follow their mother quite well; until then they stay in hiding, and the doe visits only briefly to suckle them. The roe kids have to get weaned off  from milk within 6-10 weeks: then a new mating period begins.

Until then predators are the greatest danger for the kids. This winter resulted in a noticeably more sparse deer population in Estonia.
