The Northern bat has the most northerly population range of all European bats; it can be found even north of the Arctic circle.
In Estonia the Northern bat is the most common bat species. We often encounter it flying around in gardens and parks, in the country as well as in cities. Often they even fly between high-rise apartment buildings. Like other bats they prefer an environment near a body of water if possible.
The Northern bat has a characteristically dark face and wing membranes. The fur on the back is blackish or dark brown, and the tips of the hairs are pale-coloured. Both its colouring and face are clearly different from other bats in Estonia.

In winter the Northern bat can be found hibernating both in large caves and in earth cellars.
