The poplar admiral is tied to poplars and aspens because its caterpillars feed on the trees. It certainly belongs to our largest daytime active (diurnal) butterflies, and may even be the largest, but that depends on the measures of individuals, and can be debatable. The white admiral (Limenitis camilla) is a little smaller but looks similar to the poplar admiral.
The basic colour is black-brown and dark grey. The dots on the forewings and the band on the rear wings are ”natural white”. The edges of the wings are decorated with a blue border and orange arcs, and in Urmas Tartes’ photo the coloured undersides of the wings can be seen. Some have been endowed with colour in plenty!
