The only one of our terns that is a blackleg, and large. It is really very big, the biggest of all tern species. It has the characteristic tern look, but is gull-sized and with a similar flight profile. One recognition mark is the "sooty” wing tips, showing in Arne’s photo; the tail isn’t as deeply forked as that of our other terns.
It isn’t numerous in Estonia, and nests in small colonies on the sea shores. From the end of July, when they start their migration, their raucous screaming is heard at inland waters too.
