White storks
The white storks have succeeded with their nesting this year, quite as last summer.
Bird man Rein Mikk in Tõrva has made a short and clear summary: in the 24 nests around Törva there were altogether 55 young this year, which makes 2,29 young per nest as an average. Last year it was nearly the same – 2,27. There were 4 young in one nest (on a chimney at Leebiku), 3 in 10 nests, 2 in 8 nests and 1 in 5 nests. 14 nests were on electricity transmission poles, 7 nests on supplementary poles and 3 nests on chimneys.
An interesting observation from Eedi Leelov: in the hot weather the legs of many storks are white from excrements - thermoregulation?. In northern Pärnumaa all birds seen had white legs. The same phenomenon has been observed elsewhere too.
