The phenomenon of a species having different looking imagos (adult butterflies) in different seasons is called seasonal dimorphism.
Representatives of the second generation are in flight already in July. The wings have a black basic colour with a white pattern, and at the lower edge of the rear wings, a white fringe. That is what the autumn generation (Araschnia levana f. Porsa) look like.

The spring generation imago of the map butterfly is seen at the beginning of May, and during about one month. The maps at that time have light brown upper sides of the wings, with dark dots (Araschnia levana f. Levana). In neither generation the shape of the wings or the intricate pattern on the underside changes much.
