Days in fields, nights in reed banks

Grey  and somewhat motley patterned, this is what starlings look like now. The partial migration of the immature birds that hatched here in Estonia and the adults started already in July, and they should be at the southern coasts of the Baltic by now. But new birds from the north and northeast arrive here up to the proper autumn migration that usually starts towards the end of September.
Arne’s photo shows an evening-time starling flock looking for lodgings for the night at Osmussaar, in the Inhamn reed banks. Such a swishing flock seems to be a creature on its own, with its own rules, regulations and way of life. A powerful thing to see!

Of course they annoy gardeners at times, but destroying pests and many other pleasant things are amends for a lot. And experienced gardeners keep their berry bushes protected anyway.
