A large butterfly with a peculiar fast, gliding flight, recognised by butterfly fans from far away. The forewings are triangular, the rear wings large and rounded. The base colour is orange patterned with contrasting dark dots. The undersides of the wings are greenish-yellow, and seem to be streaked with silver.
The female butterflies have two colour forms: one similar to the males and another, quite widely spread greenish-grey (Argynnis paphia valesina).
