The Year of Reading started on January 1, 2010. The Ministry of Culture wants the Year of Reading to be a reminder that reading is an enjoyable activity that offers pleasure as well as knowledge, and that good reading skills also mean easier managing of life. The Year of Reading is celebrated in Estonia, in Estonian schools outside Estonia and in universities outside Estonia where Estonian is taught.
2010 is also theYear of Nature Conservation because the first nature protection area in Estonia was created a hundred years ago: on August 14, 1910 the Vaika isles were established as a nature protection area in order to protect bird life. Today this area has become the Vilsandi National Park. Thanks to the nearly hundred years of nature protection we still have untouched nature and habitats for rare species. Besides protection of the natural environment, the cultural historical heritage in our nature is also acknowledged.
The United Nations has declared 2010 as the International Biodiversity or Wealth of Nature Year. It is a year in which all of us living on planet Earth are invited to acknowledge and value the richness of life and to help in preserving it.
