Cranes flying to overnight locations
For once in several days the weather was suitable for travellers, the southerly winds at about 4-5 m/s were no problem. In Läänemaa there was serious crane migration today during the first half of the day. Andrus Kärvet counted 3750 migrating cranes in Ullaste in Matsalu National Park, mostly flying towards Virtsu. They start their migration in the early morning, probably from Soomaa.
From the weather chart Aivar Leito foretells a massive crane and greylag goose migration wave for Wednesday, but let’s check the weather information.

Tarvo Valker says: "On Saturday (18.09) I spent a couple of hours at Rannajõe.In the evening about 5500 cranes gathered there; evidently this is the main overnight resting place in northern Läänemaa.
