Bean geese and white-fronted geese
Dear bird friends!
More than 67 000 birds of 110 species were observed in Estonia during the international birdwatch days that took place last weekend.
Nearly a hundred bird friends submitted their forms to provide this preliminary information. The most impressive event during the weekend according to the bird observers was the migration of the geese, making up nearly two thirds of all observed birds.
Most numerous of the observed species were barnacle geese (25700 birds), bean geese and greater white-fronted geese (21600 altogether), brent geese (1567) and mallards (1433).
The most exciting find of the weekend was reported from Kabli bird station in Pärnumaa, where a Pallas’s leaf warbler, very rarely seen in Estonia, was ringed. Other interesting species were the little grebes and the red-footed falcon in Hiiumaa, already mentioned by Leho Aaslaid.
From the preliminary international information at least 45 000 European bird friends forwarded their information on the bird observation days. They counted more than 1,6 million birds, with many rarities among these.
Our thanks to all who have sent in their observations to provide these preliminary results. Those who have not yet submitted their data we ask please to do so during this week, at the address:
