Feather moss (Hylocomium splendens)
The exposition ”Mosses“ at the Estonian Museum of Natural History will be open from October 7th to November 7th, 2010, at Lai 29A in Tallinn. Hours of opening are Wednesdays to Sunday, from 10 am to 5 pm.
The world of mosses is highly varied. Despite their small size, the volume of mosses is very large; they don’t need soil for growing, they stay alive for long periods without water and even as the lower parts deteriorate the tips go on growing.
At the moss exhibition different aspects of these fascinating plants can be studied in a microscope.
That mosses grow on many different surfaces and in all kinds of humidity and light conditions is shown by the many species collected from nature in Estonia.
Species collected from the Arctic and from tropical areas are also shown, to illustrate the global distribution of mosses. The reproduction of mosses is shown in large scale photos.
A museum hour in Estonian or in Russian can be booked
