On the rocky islands of the Gulf of Finland in our shore waters only a few pairs breed and they were registered only in 1988. In contrast there are about 8000 pairs breeding in Finland. Migrating razorbills have been seen until the end of November and even winterers are encountered in the waters of western Saaremaa, around 1000 individuals, depending on the weather and ice conditions.
The razorbills have such a special look that it is nearly impossible to confuse them with other sea birds. The plumage on breast and belly is white, the head and back are black. The beak is black with white ridges.
The menu is similar to that of other diving birds, but according to scientists razorbills can dive to depths of more than 100 metres.
Walking on the seashore there are always heaps of things to see – investigate – discover.
