Hedgehog rustling in fallen maple leaves
Soon our hedgehogs slip away to their winter sleep; some individuals are sure to have settled in the winter nests already.
For the hedgehog we might leave a higher, dry and protected corner in the garden, with branches and twigs and raked-up leaves and some security that we or our pets will not disturb a wintering hedgehog there.
Hedgehogs can have up to two litters. The young hedgehogs born in May have already led an independent life for some months. The second litter – if there is one – stays in the care of the hedgehog mum for winter and the family goes into the winter nest together.
A brushwood heap in a corner of the garden is a good nest place for a hedgehog. Otepää churchyard
