The snow buntings usually arrive in Estonia in October. These birds nest in the world’s northernmost mainland areas: nesting has been observed repeatedly in Greenland and vagrant flocks have been seen around the North pole. An amazing endurance shown by the little songbirds that only weigh 35 grams.
We see them mostly in the coastal areas of western Estonia, in fields or roads. The peak of the passing migrants is around the turn of the month and only a couple of hundreds stay with us for the winter. The plumage of the migrants becomes quite similar, but because of the ongoing molting there are still a quite large number of birds with differing looks, and so it is difficult to distinguish the male, the female and the immature birds. But there is always the shining white wing patch. Outside the breeding period they feed on seeds.
