It seems that the passage of migrating redpolls is ending, but depending on the winter the number of winterers varies very widely. The highest number is estimated to be around half a million.
 
They are beautiful grey-brown passerines. The plumage on the back and wings has lengthwise streaks. The head is embellished by the red forehead patch, the area under the beak is black. The male bird has more red in its plumage – at the throat, breast and vent.
 

In Arne’s photo the redpoll is searching for alder seeds; birch seeds are on the menu too.
