High time to hang out the fat balls

Surely many bird friends have put their bird feeders in order and there is a busy traffic outside the window.

A reminder to those who have left it to the last minute: the little passerines can’t get at their food in the usual places any longer; the snow cover will only increase in the next few days and there will be even more degrees of cold. It is worthwhile on your shopping round to look for fat balls on sale; unsalted lard is good too, or a mixture of fat and rolled oats poured into an empty food tin. Fasten a piece of string to the ball, tie a larger knot in the other end and wedge the string between the window and the frame. Placing it like that doesn’t even harm the window insulation, and there will be enjoyment on both sides of the window.

On Thursday the northern edge of a low-pressure area will reach Estonia, and at the same time cold air will arrive. The milder air retreats even from southern Estonia and minus degrees will dominate. From time to time there will be snowfalls and even blizzards. There will be a strong north-easterly wind. Air temperature will be -1 to -6ºC all day and night.
On Friday the edge of the weakening low pressure area will still stretch to Estonia. There will be slight snowfall in places. a northern high pressure area is however gathering strength. Cloudiness will decrease in places and the air temperature at night will fall to -6 to -12ºC; daytime temperatures will be -4 to -9ºC.
On Saturday we will be on the border between the weakening low pressure area and the increasing high pressure area. In places there will still be some snowfall. The winds will be moderate and northerly. Air temperature will be -7 to -14 ºC  at night, -5 to -10 ºC  in daytime.

Beginning on Sunday, a cold high pressure area will dominate. In coastal districts there may still be periods of snowfall. With the clearing sky air temperature can be expected to fall. In the night between Saturday and Sunday there will be -8 to -15 ºC  of cold, the following nights -12 to -18 ºC . Daytime maximum temperatures will be only 2 to 5 ºC higher.
