Redpolls are winter guests in Estonia. Numerous passing migrants have moved on southwards. The crimson forehead and the rose-coloured breast of male birds are of course striking; the back and sides are lengthwise streaked. Main winter food is seeds – from alders, birches or herbaceous plants.
The sociable birds keep together in flocks and there is no quarrelling in the groups. Probably the tie in pairs is strong too.
The number of wintering redpolls is extremely variable, it may be ten thousand to half a million. This year doesn’t seem to be a peak year.
