Crow among seals

Hooded crow Hallvares  Corvus corone cornix

With the end of November and the coming of the snow the last migration month of our hooded crows ended.  The inhabitants in cities and other settlements are more sedentary. Most given to move around are – a little surprising – the older ones, not as with other species the young birds. Together with migrants coming in from the north their winter number in Estonia is about 200 000 to 400 000 individuals.

The coastal areas have their full winter snow cover and more snow is promised. The waves bring in remnants of perished waterfowl to the shore of the open sea. There are both winged and four-legged competitors for those. What are the more daring hooded crows doing among the seals? Where the big ones are there may be leftovers for smaller beings too. Is the carrion part of the diet simply a survival necessity for the omnivorous crow in a severe winter, or is there something that the bird’s organism needs in it?
