Roe deer Metskits

At the end of November the roe deer had gathered in flocks for winter. In heavy snow it is easier to cope when you are in company. The deer gather near feeding grounds, and when they move they use the trails of stronger animals and roads that have been ploughed open. For a night lie a ground bed in the forest has to be scraped free from snow down to the soil to avoid pneumonia. It is a harsh winter, and the second in a row too; soon there will be thaw, then an ice crust will form on the snow, and it won’t make life easier for anyone.

Young bucks roam around since autumn with their fragile unbranched sticklike antlers, everyone else is bare-headed. On mature bucks this sign of male pride will start growing in the second half of February and reaches full size towards the end of April. We will see the progress on the web camera.

How to tell the sexes apart now? The white rump patch of the females seems to begin higher up, and to be a little larger, but this is no infallible rule. But it is supported by a tuft of yellowish hair in the anus area, visible between the hind legs and looking like a tail.

Some females have a heart-shaped rump patch but only when in their winter coats.
