Flying squirrels prefer massive forest areas, ancient mixed forests with aspen and birch as well as conifers. For shelter they use woodpecker hollows that they change quite often. They are active at twilight or in the night, and they seldom go down to the ground. The radius of their area of activities isn’t above 50 metres, and they feed on the catkins and buds of deciduous trees.

It took our flying squirrel investigator Uudo Timm several years to get to see the animal itself, and not only traces of its doings. Even when the nest tree was known the photos here by Rainar Kurbel took one week of toil.

The flying squirrel is a highly endangered species. ELF, Estonian Fund for Nature, collects donations for its protection.

The flying squirrel is a rare creature and sadly becoming even rarer, but together we can protect it!
The flying squirrel project of ELF aims to ensure that the habitats of the flying squirrel are preserved. So, by donating to ELF you will support Estonan nature.
